Smart Money Concepts
Smart Money Concepts (SMC) is a retail trading framework built on the premise that institutional participants move price to access liquidity, using ideas such as order blocks, liquidity sweeps, fair value gaps and market structure shifts.
SMC is a vocabulary and a set of chart-reading conventions rather than a single defined strategy. Its central claim is that large participants must source liquidity to fill size, and that this leaves identifiable footprints — clusters of stop orders being taken out, imbalanced moves away from a level, and specific candles preceding sharp expansions.
What is defensible in it
The underlying market-microstructure premise is real and uncontroversial: large orders genuinely do need counterparty liquidity, stop clusters genuinely do sit above and below obvious levels, and price genuinely does move toward pools of resting orders. None of that is invented.
What is not established
What has not been demonstrated is that retail traders can reliably identify these footprints in advance, on a chart, without order-flow data — or that doing so produces a positive expectancy after costs. SMC terminology is applied to charts after the move, where it explains price beautifully. Applied before the move, it is far more ambiguous. There is no published, independently replicated evidence establishing an edge for the retail application of the framework.
This is not a dismissal. SMC gives traders a consistent language for describing price, which has genuine value. The problem is the industry that sells it as a decoded secret with a guaranteed outcome — which is a claim about your money, not about market structure.
Our position is that the framework you use matters far less than whether you apply it consistently and size it sensibly. Two traders using the same SMC rules produce wildly different results, and the variable that separates them is almost never chart-reading skill.

Knowing the vocabulary is the easy part.
Every term here can be learned in an afternoon. Applying them consistently under pressure is the part that decides outcomes — and the part we measure.
